Liverpool are starting to be compared with some of the greatest Premier League teams in history.

Such is the nature of their dominance in England's top flight, winning 24 of their 25 games and losing none of them, that they have already taken their place amongst the competition's greats.

Besides, their current trajectory will see them become the Premier League GOATs objectively at the very least with a potential 112 points and more than 50 matches without defeat.

As football fans well know, however, statistics aren't everything and certain supporters will plump for an alternative number one regardless of how Liverpool see out the season.

Some will consider Arsenal's 'Invincibles' to be the very best, others will plump for Jose Mourinho's first Chelsea side and you can guarantee that some will point towards 1999 Manchester United.

Liverpool 2020 vs Man Utd 1999

Contrary to popular belief, the treble winners were actually pretty average in the Premier League, winning with just 79 points, but it was their dominance across the board that made them special.

Sure, other teams like Chelsea and Manchester City have won the league with more points than them, but none of them have bagged the Champions League and FA Cup in tandem.

And with Liverpool technically still able to match that feat after edging past Shrewsbury Town, it's inevitable that both teams are being compared and Sky Sports have taken a hold of the debate.

Football fans' combined XI

Steve McClaren first poked the hornet's nest by claiming only Virgil van Dijk would make a combined XI between the two teams, prompting fans to start drawing up their own hybrids.

You can check out our answer to the solution here, but Sky allowed the fans to vote on their mix of 1999 United and 2020 Liverpool - and the full results have been collected.

It seems that the public are far more open than McClaren, instead opting for a team that features six players from Old Trafford and five stars hailing from Anfield. So, so close.

Check out the Premier League fans' combined XI down below and get debating whether they're right or not.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

For starters, let's swap out Trent Alexander-Arnold for Gary Neville. Duh.

If we were being strict about the 4-4-2 formation then you'd probably say that Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole would function better together, but I can understand Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah getting the nod.

I do think there's more of a debate surrounding the goalkeepers than people would have you believe, though.

Did Peter Schmeichel have a better career than Alisson Becker has hitherto? Obviously, but was 1998-99 Schmeichel better than 2019/20 Alisson? That's very, very debatable.

For a kick off, this Liverpool team has a much better defensive record in the league and David Seaman was actually the best Premier League goalkeeper in terms of clean sheets in 1999.

Where was Schmeichel? Eighth.

And while Alisson was widely hailed as the world's best shot-stopper last season, it was Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn that hoovered up the 1999 goalkeeping awards.

That, and there were signs of Schmeichel finally declining in his thirties with just two Champions League clean sheets and one of the worst mistakes you're likely to see at Sheffield Wednesday.

So, for those reasons, I've got to swap in Alisson by a hair.

But regardless of my rant, you have to give the edge to United for that remarkable midfield...
