Just where does Virgil van Dijk rank in the pantheon of great Premier League defenders?

The Liverpool star certainly belongs in the conversation for the best ever centre-backs in English top flight history.

Based on his performances, he might be number one. He narrowly came second to Lionel Messi at the 2019 Ballon d’Or and has been indefatigable at the heart of Liverpool’s backline since his move to Anfield two years ago.

But the argument against him is the lack of trophies.

Van Dijk is closing in on a Premier League winner’s medal to add to the Champions League.

But his list of honours is nothing compared to the likes of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, those who rival him for the status of best defender in Premier League history.

That doesn’t matter according to Twitter user @TLister77, though.

A Liverpool fan, he’s penned a detailed thread on Twitter explaining why Van Dijk is “comfortably better” than former Manchester United man Nemanja Vidic.

The supporter has used stats to support his claim, suggesting Van Dijk has better positioning, is more dominant and has had more of an impact on Liverpool’s defence than Vidic did at Man United.

Check it out below…

Vidic formed an incredible partnership with Ferdinand at Old Trafford, the pair winning five Premier League titles together.

There can be no denying that the Serbian was an outstanding player who contributed to Man United’s success in the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

But what we’re seeing from Van Dijk is something truly special; he’s helped to transform Liverpool’s defence from a liability into a strength.

And while Vidic was doing it alongside Ferdinand, Van Dijk has played alongside Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, helping the trio reach a new level in their performances.

Vidic has the medals, but we’re going to have to side with Van Dijk on this one.
