Manchester City have been banned from European competition for two years. The Citizens were found guilty of having misled UEFA and breaking financial fair play rules. They have also been given a £25m fine.UEFA said in its statement, per the Guardian: “The Adjudicatory Chamber, having considered all the evidence, has found that Manchester City committed serious breaches of the Uefa Financial Fair Play Regulations by overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to Uefa between 2012 and 2016.“The Adjudicatory Chamber has also found that in breach of the regulations the club failed to cooperate in the investigation of this case by the CFCB.”

For many, this is a long time coming. Man City have spent bucket loads of money for over a decade.

Arsene Wenger is one leading figure in football that has called for City to be banned in the past.

Back in 2009, the French manager accused City, as well as Real Madrid, of financial doping.

It took a long time but, 11 years after Wenger's comments, City have finally been punished.

But did he actually have something to do with it?

In November, Wenger recently took up a position at FIFA as it's chief of global football development.

And, a few months after taking the job, City have been banned.

Arsenal fans have now joked that Wenger actually had something to do with it.

With Arsenal trailing in the race for a Champions League spot, some have joked that Wenger convinced UEFA to take action to boost his former side's chances of qualifying for Europe's premier cup competition once again.

It seems unlikely that Wenger played a role in City being banned.

But maybe, just maybe, he pulled some strings so his former side could return to the Champions League...

City could yet see their ban overturned, anyway.

They have 10 days to appeal and they have already announced their intention to do so.
