The entire footballing world was rocked on Friday when the massive news broke that Manchester City face a two-year ban from competing in the Champions League.

UEFA announced that City were being sanctioned for "overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016".

Man City's breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations has somewhat tainted their remarkable success in recent seasons and the club's future is incredibly unclear.

City are set to appeal the decision, but will manager Pep Guardiola and stars like Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero leave if the ban isn't overturned?

UEFA also hit City with a €30 million fine and the latest reports have suggested that Man City could be stripped of their 2013-14 Premier League title - enter Jose Mourinho.

City to be stripped of league title?

The 2013-14 campaign is remembered as the year that Liverpool nearly won their first Premier League title and for, of course, that Steven Gerrard slip against Mourinho's Chelsea.

Manuel Pellegrini's City pipped Liverpool to the title by two points but their FFP breaches have sparked talk that they could have that triumph taken away from them.

Mourinho ponders Man Utd title after City drama

Following Aston Villa 2-3 Tottenham on Sunday, former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho questioned whether the Red Devils could be retrospectively awarded the 2017-18 league title.

When asked to comment on UEFA's ruling, the "Special One" said, via Goal: "My view is that I didn't lose one single minute analysing what UEFA and FIFA have to analyse.

"If I go into that analysis, I have to ask if the team that finished second in 2018 (his Man United side) is going to be champion, yes or no?"

The 57-year-old, who won the Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield whilst at United, added: "That would be interesting. But jokes apart, I just wait calmly."

Mourinho asked the question in a joking manner but he did famously call finishing second at Man Utd in 2017-18 as one of the "biggest achievements" of his stunning managerial career.

What happened in 2017-18?

In 2017-18, United finished 19 points behind the remarkable Pep Guardiola team that were dubbed "Centurions" after amassing 100 points over the course of the season.

Mourinho is no stranger to winning Premier League titles, however, having won three of them across two different spells at Chelsea.

Only time will reveal all the ramifications of Man City's FFP breaches, but one of them could be the fifth-placed team in the league this season qualifying for the Champions League.

So, current Spurs boss Mourinho may be going head-to-head with both Man Utd and Chelsea in an attempt to secure Champions League football for 2020-21.
