Will Manchester City be stripped of their 2013-14 Premier League title?

It’s certainly a possibility, according to the Daily Mail, who reported over the weekend that City may face a backdated points deduction if a separate Premier League investigation were to find the club had breached financial rules.

City have already been hit with a two-year ban from the Champions League and a £25 million fine for “serious breaches” of UEFA’s financial regulations.

The reigning Premier League champions have confirmed they are appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in an attempt to overturn the ruling.

But if their appeal is unsuccessful and the Premier League also decide that punishment is warranted, then City will find themselves in serious trouble.

There’s already talk that the club could potentially be relegated - down to League Two, according to some reports - while the futures of Pep Guardiola and his superstar players would also be thrown into doubt.

If City are stripped of their 2013-14 title, then Liverpool could potentially be crowned champions for that season.

Steven Gerrard, whose infamous slip against Chelsea ended up costing Liverpool towards the end of that season, admitted that he is “really interested” to see if action is taken against City.

"I'm really interested to see the outcome of that,” the former Liverpool captain, who now manages Rangers, told Sky Sports. “Until I get the punishment from the Premier League, I won't comment further. But I'm really, really interested in it...for obvious reasons.”

Gerrard, by his own admission, still thinks about the slip most days, so the possibility of Liverpool being retrospectively crowned Premier League champions for that season fills him with hope.

The Anfield legend isn’t the only Liverpool player who could be in line to receive a Premier League winners’ medal for that season, of course.

To be eligible, players must have made at least five league appearances that season.

There are 21 eligible players in total…

Goalkeepers: Simon Mignolet.

Defenders: Glen Johnson, Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Jose Enrique, Daniel Agger, Aly Cissokho, Martin Kelly, Jon Flanagan.

Midfielders: Luis Alberto, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen, Steven Gerrard, Victor Moses, Lucas Leiva.

Forwards: Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Iago Aspas, Raheem Sterling.

Brendan Rodgers was in charge of the team and would also receive a medal.

If this happens, Kolo Toure would become the first player in Premier League history to win the title with three different clubs.

The retired defender, who now works as a first-team coach at Leicester City under Rodgers, was part of Arsenal’s 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ side and also won the league with Man City in 2011-12.
