Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has confirmed that Manchester United's Harry Maguire should have been dismissed against Chelsea.VAR played a massive role during the clash of the titans at Stamford Bridge and the Red Devils benefited from three decisions that had Frank Lampard and co kicking themselves. And on the topic of kicking, perhaps the most egregious call was failing to send off Maguire for what looked like a clear act of dissent on Michy Batshuayi.  The United captain visibly extended his boot into the midriff of Batshuayi having fallen on his back and later explained away the incident as being concerned that the Belgian would fall on top of him. However, the footage seems pretty incriminating and Maguire's defence appears to be crumbling after refereeing titan Clatternburg put pen to paper in the Daily Mail last night.

'Maguire should have seen red'

"On first viewing, I wanted to support Maguire, thinking maybe he had caught the Chelsea striker in his follow through after challenging for the ball," the 44-year-old explained.

"But replays showed the United defender made a clear second movement towards Batshuayi which he could have avoided. He made a stamping motion into Batshuayi’s groin and should have seen red.

"VAR looked at this but did not deem it a clear error by referee Anthony Taylor, and this is where the inconsistencies lie.

"Let’s not forget Taylor was the man in the middle when Tottenham’s Son Heung-min made a similar foul on Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger in December.

"Taylor missed the challenge by Maguire, but had he gone to his pitch-side monitor, I’m sure he would have sent him off."

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Sorry, Harry, but I've got to agree with Clattenburg here.

Planting studs into the groin area of another player seems a pretty reckless way to protect yourself, especially considering Batshuayi has largely come to a stop by the time he reached the touchline.

Even if Maguire is telling you truth, he'll know better than most that any sort of reflex action into the body of an opponent is always going to raise questions, so he can count himself very lucky.

And so can United because it was Maguire who wrapped up the three points by heading home from Bruno Fernandes' corner, which he otherwise wouldn't have been able to do.

But with no red shown on 22 minutes, it was red that prevailed on 90.
