Former US Marine George Hood has set a new planking world record.

According to Yahoo News, the 62-year-old(!!!) held the correct position for an astonishing eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds to write his name in the history books.

Posted on Saturday, the astonishing feat will takes its place in the Guinness Book of World Records for "Longest Male Abdominal Plank".

Hood was able to surpass the former mark of Chinese police officer Mao Weidong by almost 14 minutes.

The event took place as part of a fundraising competition in Illinois to raise awareness of mental wellbeing.

Hood breaks planking world record

Hood was joined by his family, friends and team for support and the local high school band even spurred him on for the first five hours with live music.

Despite his age, Hood has undergone a rigorous training programme to prepare himself for the record that included over 2,100 hours of practise planking.

Considering your average joe would be quivering like a leaf after no more than two minutes, it's incredible to think how Hood dribbled himself to keep deadly still for hours on end.

Insane training programme

You don't just get iron abs through sheer will power, though, as the American drilled himself with a mind-blowing 674,000 sit-ups and 270,000 push-ups.

It's also reported that Hood previously completed an even longer plank in 2018, registering a barely comprehensible session of 10 hours and 10 minutes.

However, it seems as though we've seen the last of Hood's planking forays as he looks to focus on 'other fitness endeavours' going forward.

Impressive 12 months for planking

The news of Hood's astonishing achievement comes less than a year after set the women's planking world record with a time of four hours and 20 minutes.

The Montrealer broke the previous mark by an entire 50 minutes at the First International Plank Training Conference.

So, it's been quite the year in the weird and wonderful world of record-breaking planking.

Say what you like about these athletes dedicating their time to such a niche form of exercise, but anybody who has ever held the plank position knows how much respect they deserve.
