Gymnastics superstar, Simone Biles, claimed her third Sportswoman of the Year title at last night’s Laureus Awards in Berlin.

The 22-year-old American won five gold medals at last year’s World Championships in Stuttgart sealing her position as the most decorated sportsperson in world gymnastics history.

Biles thanked the German audience from her training camp in Houston from which she is preparing from the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo.

"This means the world to me. I want to thank my family and friends," she said via video link.

Nadia Comaneci, five-time Olympic gold medallist in gymnastics spoke of the way Biles has been able to dominate her sport at still such a young age.

“There cannot be many sportsmen or women who dominate their sports the way she has in gymnastics.

“We have to keep remembering that she is just 22, and she is likely to win another stack of gold medals in the Tokyo Olympics."

Sportsman of the Year, Hamilton, calls for more diversity

Meanwhile, British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton was jointly awarded the Laureus award for Sportsman of the Year with Barcelona striker Lionel Messi.

The British racing driver, who won his sixth Formula 1 title this season, spoke in his acceptance speech of the lack of diversity that remains an issue in his sport today.

“I grew up in a sport that has given my life meaning. But I've grown up in a sport which has little to no diversity.

“It's all of our responsibilities to use our platform to push for gender equality and inclusivity. We have to make sure we are engaging and representing what the world is today."
