Frank Lampard is in the dock after Chelsea's 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United.

Among the charges are the fact that he has now lost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer three times this season, United completing their first double over the Blues since 1988.

There were some rare murmurings against the manager from the Stamford Bridge crowd too, fans cheering ironically when he finally brought on Olivier Giroud for Michy Batshuayi.

In truth, both Solskjaer and Lampard have come under pressure at different points this season and there are mitigating factors with which to defend them.

Lampard had to contend with a transfer ban and is experiencing his first season as a Premier League manager, while many United fans blame the board, not their head coach, for their side's underwhelming campaign so far.

It's definitely the Norwegian who has felt the most heat, though.

Sure, Solskjaer has failed to impress tactically since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December 2018, but he so often gets it right in the big games.

To illustrate that point, YouTube account Football Made Simple has uploaded a tactical analysis video  showing how Lampard and Solskjaer set up their respective teams.

It demonstrates how Chelsea's narrow pressing allowed United to create more width through their full-backs.

The hosts' defence was also encouraged to stay back, in turn creating a massive gap between them and the midfield.

Bruno Fernandes was key to much of United's success, neutralising the threat of Jorginho.

GIVEMESPORT'S Kat Lucas:

This shouldn't be seen an indictment of Lampard, not least after a game in which VAR played such a decisive role, failing to send off Harry Maguire and then wrongly disallowing Kurt Zouma's goal when Fred had pushed Cesar Azpilicueta into Brandon Williams.

The Chelsea legend has done much to transform his side into a young, likeable outfit who are perpetually being undone by defensive mistakes.

Yet it's also understandable why United fans point to him as an obvious parallel with Solskjaer.

These are two club legends who would not have been given the job without their playing history.

Perhaps Lampard should get a free pass until he's had another transfer window, but some of his decisions - like continuing to exile Giroud until his hand is forced - deserve to be scrutinised. And especially with nine losses and five draws in the league this season.
