Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes dominate day one of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Barcelona

F1 Winter Testing in Barcelona - Day One

he 2020 Formula 1 season came another step closer after the first day of pre-season testing in Barcelona today.

The various teams were putting their new cars through their paces as we watched closely to see if we could get an idea as to what kind of season we can expect.

Ferrari and Red Bull will have been quietly hopeful of making a dent in Mercedes’ dominance, but, after day 1, it really does look like we are in for more of the same.

Mercedes secured a one-two with reigning champion Lewis Hamilton easily outstripping the competition by quite a distance.

Teammate Valtteri Bottas clocked the second-fastest time on a day that Mercedes will be more than satisfied with.

Ferrari, who had to do without an ill Sebastian Vettel, were well off the pace, with youngster Charles Leclerc registering the 11th fastest time on the day.

Red Bull had a slightly more encouraging day with World Championship hopeful Max Verstappen finishing the day in Catalonia with the fourth-fastest time.

Sergio Perez will go to sleep tonight a happy man after Racing Point surprised all comers to nick the third most rapid lap-time of the lot.

Renault also enjoyed a solid day while Carlos Sainz’s McLaren showed some very exciting signs of life.

All in all, it is difficult to make any concrete assumptions after just one day of testing, but there can be no doubting that Mercedes will be very happy with their day’s work.

Testing continues tomorrow and the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull will certainly be hoping to see a big improvement.

For now though, it looks like it could be yet more Mercedes domination in 2020.
