Sportswear giant Nike, along with 142 businesses has signed a letter of support to overturn a Tennessee bill intended to prevent biological male athletes from being able to compete against girls.

The letter claims that other states will retaliate against Tennessee if it passes laws to stop biological males from competing as transgender girls. The letter reads, "policies that signal that the state is not welcoming to everyone put our collective economic success at risk."

Nike's stance in the transgender debate is not only controversial in my opinion, but also confusing. Although the sportswear company claims to represent "freedom" for transgender people in America, Nike is also a big supporter of China where transgender people have few rights.

One teenage athlete who is fighting the injustice of transgender sports is Connecticut track star, Selina Soule. The Connecticut high-schooler knows from experience just how unequal the playing field is as soon as she lines up against transgender girls who speed past their opponents at state track competitions.

Although she praises her transgender competitors for "being true to themselves and having the courage to do what they believe in," Soule argues that biological males are scientifically at an advantage over their female competitors.

She said: "It's upsetting when we work hard all season and put in a lot of effort, only to turn up at the state meets and get beat by someone who is biologically a male and lose state championships over this."

Is Nike's stance in the transgender sports debate crushing women's sports?
