Manchester United currently have half the Premier League points as Liverpool.

The Red Devils are experiencing their worst season in England's top division since the 1992 rebranding, whereas Liverpool are on course to win the title with a record points tally.

As a result, it's pretty hard to imagine a world where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thrusts his side back into title contention any time soon and, frankly, they aren't vaguely on Liverpool's radar.

But ex-United man Robbie Savage is adamant that his former team are just three signings, albeit for around £250 million, away from challenging Liverpool and Manchester City.

It's certainly a bold claim, but when you consider the three names on Savage's mind - all of which have been linked with moves to Old Trafford - it suddenly sounds a little less far-fetched.

'Man Utd need three signings'

Writing in his column for the Mirror, Savage penned: "Here’s a thought – and United fans are welcome to tell me if I’m barking up the wrong tree.

"If Solskjaer was handed £250 million to go out and sign central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, playmaker Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho up front, Solskjaer’s best team would be capable of giving Liverpool and Manchester City a run for their money next season.

"In an earlier column this season, I said United were miles away from Liverpool and City.

Could Man Utd catch up Liverpool?

"But if they can beat other clubs to those major signings – and Champions League football would be the best way to do that – I now think a return towards the top end is achievable with one good summer in the transfer market.

"Before you rush for your keypads to disagree, consider the facts.

"This season, United have beaten Chelsea three times. They have beaten City twice. They have beaten Tottenham.

"And they are the only side to have taken a point from Liverpool in the Premier League.

"It’s taken seven years, since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, to reach this stage, but I’m calling it now. Land those three big signings in the summer, and Manchester United will be back in business."

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Title contention with those signings? Yes. Title winners with those signings? Not for me.

Koulibaly and Maguire would be a formidable centre-back partnership, Grealish would add some real invention to the midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes and Sancho would mark a real upgrade on Anthony Martial and Daniel James.

And while, yes, United have already been superb in the biggest games, I just can't see a world where even that bolstered side would be able to dethrone Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Signing a glut of quality can take you a long way, but the Reds have proven that creating the best team in the league is most important with a squad of players all singing from the same hymn sheet.

Plus, when the chips are down, Solskjaer won't be able to hold a managerial candle to either Klopp or Pep Guardiola. Pressure makes diamonds, but you need the minerals in the first place.
