You couldn’t really overstate just how important Chelsea vs Tottenham was.It was a London derby. It was Frank Lampard vs Jose Mourinho. It was a huge match in the battle for fourth place.Just one point separated the two sides in fourth and fifth but they bothered entered the clash tentatively.Chelsea hadn’t won in four league games, while Spurs were coming off the back of a 1-0 home loss to Leipzig in the Champions League. But it was the home side, with Olivier Giroud starting upfront, who started brightly.

They - and Giroud - got their reward after just 15 minutes.

The Frenchman saw his shot saved, Ross Barkley saw his shot hit the post before Giroud fired home.

It was a first-half that Chelsea controlled as they took their 1-0 lead into the break.

But they doubled it within minutes of the restart as Giroud, Mason Mount and Barkley combined to set up Marcos Alonso, who fired home brilliantly.

But perhaps the biggest talking point came minutes later.

Giovani Lo Celso went over the top of the ball and caught Cesar Azpilicueta on the shin. VAR had a long look at it but decided it didn't warrant a red card.

It left Frank Lampard infuriated.

VAR later admitted that they made a mistake and that Lo Celso, in fact, should have been dismissed.

Wow.

Spurs made things nervy when Erik Lamela's cross hit Antonio Rudiger and deflected into the back of the net.

But Chelsea held on for a very important 2-1 victory to go four points clear of Spurs.
