All hail Tyson Fury, the new WBC heavyweight champion of the world. The British boxer produced a masterclass in Las Vegas to triumph over Deontay Wilder and regain his place at the top of the heavyweight division.Anthony Joshua holds the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO titles but you’ll have a hard time putting him ahead of Fury on this evidence.Fury was on top from the moment the fight got underway and knocked Wilder down in the third round.Another knockdown arrived in the fifth and the fight was stopped two rounds later.

Wilder acknowledged that Fury deserved to win the bout but he has the option to do it all again; a rematch clause in the contract means he has 30 days to order a trilogy.

The appeal of a third fight has lessened somewhat, especially considering that Fury was the better pugilist when they first shared a ring together in 2018.

Fury has wanted this for some time now. He promised to “knock him out” in a tweet sent to Wilder in October 2013.

And a video message that he sent to the Bronze Bomber in 2017 shows just how far he’s come.

Fury was on the comeback trail after battling depression and weight issues when he told Wilder: “I’m coming back for you.”

“Guess who’s back? The one and only,” Fury says. “Shout going out to the big ‘Bronze Bomber’ Deontay Wilder. Big respect, for giving me the motivation. Telling me I can’t do it and that I’m finished.

I’m coming back for you baby. I’m coming back for you!

Fury reached a weight of 28 stone during his crisis.

His problems with drugs and depression have been well documented, but the story now is all about a man who fought back from the bottom to sit on the throne once again.
