Deontay Wilder’s team have reportedly informed Tyson Fury’s boxing manager and promoter Frank Warren that they intend to implement the rematch clause, making a third fight between the ‘Gypsy King’ and the ‘Bronze Bomber.’

The contract for the second fight included a clause giving the loser a right to a third bout, however, Wilder has 30 days to make an official decision whether to implement it or not.

Wilder’s co-manager Sheldon “Shelly” Finkel is believed to have called Frank Warren on Sunday morning to inform Fury’s team of their immediate plans.

Warren said: “Shelly Finkel rang me the morning after the fight to tell me they would probably invoke the immediate rematch.

“So that’s where we’re at right now. I’m assuming that the trilogy fight is going ahead.”

If the third fight were to go ahead, the purse split would likely be divided 60-40 in Fury’s favour, and it has been suggested it would be staged at a 72,000-seat stadium in the Las Vegas strip, which is currently under construction.

Fury himself also believes that previously unbeaten fighter from Alabama will want a third fight.

Speaking in his post-fight press conference, Fury said: “The spoils of war have just happened.

“I need to enjoy this victory and Deontay will need time to recover from the fight, but I’m almost sure he’ll take the rematch because he’s a dynamite puncher.”

It is clear that Fury still thinks very highly of Wilder despite earning a comprehensive victory over the ‘Bronze Bomber.’

Fury said: “Let me tell you, Deontay Wilder, he never went down easy. He’s a very tough guy and took a lot of good rights.”

Should Wilder decline the rematch, the obvious alternative for Fury is an all-British heavyweight showdown against Anthony Joshua, who currently holds the division’s other three world titles.

Joshua currently has a mandatory fight to negotiate against Kubrat Pulev, lined up in June, but a potential ‘step-aside fee’ could be arranged to hasten the super showdown between the two champions.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “We should go straight into AJ v Fury!

“No one wants to see a third fight, it was conclusive, but we will see if Wilder exercises the right to take the rematch.”
