What Liverpool and Manchester City have done in the past few seasons have been remarkable.Pep Guardiola has guided Manchester City to seven trophies in the past few seasons, while Liverpool won the Champions League last May and are smashing record-after-record this campaign. Both teams' success in recent years has raised the question: which team is the greatest English club side in history?Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp and David Jones answered that very question on Monday Night Football.Only teams that were playing after the European Cup was formed in 1955 were considered.

Neville and Carragher both believed a side should not be considered great based solely off one season.

So, the 12 teams considered were based off the success that they had during a three-season spell.

A points system was designed to rank the teams.

Teams were given more points for winning big trophies such as the Champions League and the Premier League, while fewer points were given for winning smaller trophies like the League Cup.

View the points system below:

Man City and Liverpool's current sides were both not considered as they have not been at their brilliant best across three whole seasons yet.

It was mentioned that both sides would be high up the list should they win multiple trophies this campaign, though.

Here is how MNF ranked the best teams in English football history...

It was close, but Liverpool's side in the late-1970s, managed by Bob Paisley, just won top spot.

That Liverpool side were incredible, winning back-to-back European Cup titles.

They also managed four other trophies, including two league titles.

Watch Carragher and Neville speak about that Liverpool side below:

In second was Manchester United's side under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2006-2009.

That teams was filled with world-class talent including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

They won the Premier League in each of those three seasons and also won one Champions League.

But, ultimately, what gave Liverpool's side the edge is that they managed one more European Cup than Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

If Ferguson's team were able to win the Champions League final against Barcelona in 2009, they would have pipped Liverpool to top spot.

Elsewhere, many think United's treble winners are the best team in English history but they came joint third.

Arsenal's 'Invincibles' came in joint sixth along with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Watch Carragher and Neville speak about those Chelsea and Arsenal sides below:

While Sir Matt Busby's Man United side of the late 1960's, which featured Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best, were rated in joint 10th.
