The Champions League final of 2012 was a true David vs Goliath encounter on paper.

Bayern Munich hosted the biggest match in club football and managed to seal passage to the final round of the competition after beating Real Madrid on penalties.

The German team were in fine form and they welcomed Chelsea to the Allianz Arena, a team decimated by injuries and suspension.

Roberto di Matteo's team had miraculously scraped past Barcelona in the semi-final, but absolutely no one believed they could overcome Bayern.

The pessimism was enhanced by Chelsea's starting XI that night. Ryan Bertrand and Salomon Kalou on the wings and Jose Bosingwa deployed at right-back in place of the suspended Branislav Ivanovic, disastrous.

A Bayern XI that contained Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger should have obliterated Chelsea that evening.

But Chelsea still had their go-to man, Didier Drogba and he was hungry for the one piece of silverware that had eluded him.

After Muller had put the hosts ahead on 83 minutes, the Ivorian stepped up to deliver the most iconic goal in Chelsea's history.

Watching the great man leap in the air and power a header past Manuel Neuer is the stuff of footballing folklore, with Gary Neville delivering another 'goalgasm' in commentary.

Drogba then almost became the villain when he gave away a penalty in extra-time, but Petr Cech thwarted Robben from the spot.

Chelsea miraculously held on for the extra 30 minutes and Drogba knew he had some making up to do for his lackadaisical tackle less than a hour earlier.

He was handed the perfect setting, the chance to win the game from the spot after Ivica Olic and Schweinsteiger had both missed their penalties.

Drogba stepped up and nonchalantly rolled the ball past Neuer to seal the most improbable Champions League final win arguably of all-time.

The greatest day in Chelsea's long footballing history and a reminder that anything is possible in football.

Frank Lampard's team may need to conjure some of that match-winning spirit tonight if they're to see off Bayern at Stamford Bridge.

But the Blues didn't have to deal with the irrepressible Robert Lewandowski back in 2012...
