Alphonso Davies could have joined Manchester United in 2018 - but his trial was called off

Chelsea FC v FC Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg

Not every football fan will have been overly familiar with Alphonso Davies at the start of the season.

The 19-year-old played six times for Bayern Munich last term, with his debut appearance coming in January 2019.

This season, though, the teenager has established his status as one of the best young full-backs on the planet.

Davies has shone all season, earning rave reviews for both his attacking and defensive contributions from left-back.

The Canada international, who has one goal and eight assists in 29 appearances for Bayern this season, is lightning quick, a tremendous dribbler of the ball, and can tackle.

Bayern sealed Davies’ signature in July 2018 after agreeing a multi-million-dollar deal with Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The initial fee paid was $13.5 million, potentially rising to $22 million depending on add-ons, which was a record at the time for Major League Soccer.

Davies made his MLS debut aged just 15, becoming the second-youngest player in the league’s history behind Freddy Adu.

But unlike Adu, Davies is taking his opportunity in European football with both hands. He looks the real deal.

Did you know, though, that Manchester United could have signed the hugely-talented full-back?

Following his stunning performance in Bayern’s 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst retweeted a link to an article from December 2017.

It explained that United had invited Davies to Manchester for a three-week trial, which was set to take place in January 2018 - but it was called off shortly beforehand.

Why? Well, Davies instead spent the new year with Canada’s Olympic team camp.

It was unclear at the time whether the Whitecaps would grant Davies permission to fly to Manchester before the new MLS season began in March 2018 - but that obviously didn’t happen.

Whether they lost interest or were simply beaten to his signature by Bayern, Davies went on to sign for the Bundesliga giants months later.

As you can probably imagine after his display against Frank Lampard’s side, United fans are gutted to discover that they missed out on such a hugely talented starlet…

Still, it’s not all bad.

Brandon Williams is also 19 and looks a class act himself.

Breaking into the first team would have been a lot harder for the Manchester-born defender had Davies moved to Old Trafford two years ago.
