The Olympics is the latest sporting event to come under threat of being cancelled due to the Coronavirus virus.

This comes after International Olympic Committee chief Dick Pound has warned that this summer’s Games won’t be postponed, but instead, completely called off if the Coronavirus isn’t contained.

The current number of confirmed Coronavirus cases across the world now stands at over 80,000, with the virus now claiming the lives of 2,700, with four of those being in Japan.

The Olympics have only ever been cancelled once during its 124-year history, which was the 1940 Games in Japan, due to World War 2.

It now seems that Japan could be unfortunately set to miss out on the Games yet again if officials don’t deem the land of the rising sun to be safe.

Dick Pound revealed that postponement isn’t a likely scenario and that they would be more likely cancelled altogether if the IOC’s consultations with the World Health Organisation stated that Tokyo wouldn’t be a safe area for the games.

Pound further stated, as per The Sun: “You just don’t postpone something on the size and scale of the Olympics.

"There’s so many moving parts, so many countries and different seasons, and competitive seasons, and television seasons.

"You can’t just say, `We’ll do it in October.’ You’re probably looking at a cancellation."

He also stated that relocating the Games wouldn’t be possible either as Japan have officially spent £10billion on preparations for the Olympics.

Pound, however, insists that athletes should keep training as usual, as for now, the Games will go ahead.

“As far as we all know, you’re going to be in Tokyo. All indications are at this stage that it will be business as usual."

He further went on to say: “So keep focused on your sport and be sure that the IOC is not going to send you into a pandemic situation.”

The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro also faced speculation of cancellation due to the outbreak of the Zika Virus, despite this, the Games still went ahead.
