Real Madrid vs Manchester City is the tie of the last-16 in the Champions League. The most successful side in the competition’s history against the side so desperate to win their first European trophy.Zinedine Zidane against Pep Guardiola. The tie has everything. With the Premier League out of reach for City this season, it represented City’s biggest match of the season.

Guardiola has often been questioned for his tactics in big Champions League matches. Does he pay his opponents too much respect with his line-ups?

Well, against Real, he baffled almost everyone.

Both Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling were left on the bench while he fielded a bizarre 4-4-2 with Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva playing as false nines, with Riyad Mahrez on the right and Gabriel Jesus on the left.

But forget all about tactics and neat passing, City almost took the lead with the ultimate route one goal.

We all know Ederson can kick the ball pretty far but his ping in the fist-half to Mahrez was just insane.

It landed at the Algerian’s feet just outside the Real Madrid penalty area.

Take a look:

Unfortunately, Mahrez couldn’t bring the ball into play and give Ederson the assist his 80 yard goal-kick deserved.

Ederson is clearly pretty handy when it comes to goal-kicks but will he take a penalty kick before the end of the season?

Guardiola previously admitted that the Brazilian goalkeeper is the club's best spot-kick taker and, after City missed their fourth consecutive penalty at the weekend against Leicester, Ederson could finally be given the responsibility.

He might have to take a bit off it, though...
