On Tuesday the 25th of February, it was announced that footballer Lucy Kerr sadly lost her battle with cancer at the young age of 20.

The death of the Charlton Athletic youth player certainly upset the footballing world, with players and fans of the game from all over the world taking to social media to express their condolences to the friends and family of Lucy. 

Charlton Athletic Women released a statement stating: “Everyone at Charlton Athletic Women is saddened to hear the news”.

Lucy joined the side in the 2013/2014 season as she played for the Under-14s side, she went on to impress not only on the football pitch but also off of the pitch, as she won Player of the Year that season. She progressed into the Under-16s at Charlton Athletic and even managed to captain Kent Schools.

Lucy made the step up to play senior football with Charlton Athletics’ development team. Manager Riteesh Mishra who worked with Lucy at the Under-16s level commented on the heart-breaking news.

“The news is tragic. My heart goes out to Lucy’s family and friends” said Mishra.

“She was there at the start of my journey with Charlton as a coach with the Under-16s.

“Her personality and attitude in particular were infectious as she always put a smile on the faces of staff.”

The passing of the young player undoubtedly brought emotion to the football community with many footballing icons showing their respect.

Toni Duggan, Karen Carney, and Leah Williamson were just a few of the many names that reflected and shared their love towards Lucy's family and friends following her passing.

Ex-teammate Billie Halladay took to Facebook to write a post in memory of Lucy Kerr.

“RIP Lucy Kerr. You were a fantastic footballer & I will never forget the games we played together at Sittingbourne Lionesses!

"Although we weren’t that close nowadays, no matter where or when we saw each other we’d always have a catch up about football & who we were currently playing for. My thoughts & prayers go out to you and your family!

"I know your dad was extremely proud of you & how far you came in your footballing journey!

"It’s so sad that you were taken from us so early but you’ve now gained your wings & I hope you fly high & continue to score screamers up in heaven! Rest in peace.”

Charlton Athletic released an announcement stating that:

“The thoughts of everyone at Charlton Athletic Women are with the family at this difficult time and the club will pay tribute to Lucy in an upcoming fixture”.
