This just hasn’t been Jesse Lingard’s season.

The 27-year-old has endured a wretched campaign in which he has failed to score a single goal in the Premier League.

Lingard now has to settle for a place on the bench and even managed to be the butt of the jokes in Manchester United’s 5-0 win over Club Brugge in the Europa League.

The midfielder was named on the bench for the match but came on for Bruno Fernandes in the 65th minute.

He recorded an assist for Fred in the late stages but it was for his attempted shot just minutes before that Lingard found himself being mocked.

A corner was worked to Lingard outside Club Brugge’s area and, eyeing a chance to get on the scoresheet, he proceeded to let fly.

But his effort was wayward and came closer to hitting the corner flag than he did the back of the net.

As Robbie Savage said on commentary, it just sums up his season.

Man United enjoyed a fine afternoon, though, overcoming Club Brugge after a difficult first leg.

The tie was wrapped up in the first half when the Belgian side were reduced to 10 men and Man United scored three goals.

Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot in the 27th minute after Simon Deli handled inside the area and Odion Ighalo netted his first goal for the Red Devils shortly afterwards.

Scott McTominay made it 3-0 to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side before half-time, and it was just the opening 45 minutes that Man United needed to calm any nerves inside the stadium.

Brazilian midfielder Fred scored two goals late on to ensure a thumping 5-0 win.

Man United fans will certainly be eyeing Europa League glory now.
