The Carabao Cup final on Sunday presents Aston Villa with the chance to land their first trophy since they won the League Cup in 1996.It won’t be easy. They take on a Manchester City side buoyed by an impressive 2-1 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League. There’s also the clear disparity in talent between the two squads. Man City, second in the Premier League table, have 32 more points than relegation-threatened Villa.Pep Guardiola’s side are naturally the heavy favourites to prevail but Dean Smith’s side will relish the opportunity to cause an upset.Or so you’d think.

However, talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has called on Smith to name a weakened side at Wembley Stadium in order to focus on their Premier League survival.

“They have no chance,” Durham said. “They should put out a weakened side because they need to focus on staying in the Premier League.

“They are not going to beat Man City, whatever team they put out.

“If they start on the front foot, they’re going to concede loads of goals. If they make it a dirty game, they’re going to have players sent off and get annihilated.

“If they try to defend, Man City are just going to pick them apart.

“What’s the point? This is going to be such a one-sided game.

“There’s not even a point in trying to say, ‘well Aston Villa have a chance if they do this’.

“They’ve got no chance.

“I think those words will not come back to haunt me.”

Imagine if they do. He’ll never live it down.

It’s only February and we’ve quite possibly heard the worst take of 2020.
