Liverpool have the best goalkeeper in the world.Alisson signed from Roma in the summer of 2018 for a then world-record fee of £66.8 million. And it’s fair to say he’s repaid that hefty transfer fee.He claimed the Premier League Golden Glove in his debut campaign as well as being named in the FIFPro World XI, claiming the best FIFA goalkeeper and becoming the inaugural winner of the Yashin Trophy, an award for best performing goalkeeper in the world. It’s about time Liverpool had a goalkeeper they could rely on. Just a few years ago, it was either Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius. Before that, it was even worse. So, with inspiration from Planet Football, we’ve decided to take a look at the 21 goalkeepers who have made appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League era.And it makes for pretty grim reading for their fans.Let’s take a look from worst to best:

21 | Daniele Padelli

We’ll forgive even Liverpool fans if they forgot Padelli ever played for the club. In January 2017, the young Italian goalkeeper joined them until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.

He became the first Italian to ever play for Liverpool when he made his one and only appearance on the final day of the season against Charlton. He didn’t impress and subsequently returned to Sampdoria. The 34-year-old is now at Inter Milan.

20 | Patrice Luzi

Luzi played just 13 minutes in the Premier League for Liverpool. However, he helped Liverpool see out a 1-0 win against Chelsea in 2004 after Jerzy Dudek’s injury.

19 | Adam Bogdan

A free transfer signing from Bolton in 2015, Bogdan played twice in the league for Liverpool. His first came away to Watford when he dropped the ball from a corner after three minutes, allowing Nathan Ake score. Liverpool lost 3-0.

A month later, he played in the FA Cup against Exeter and allowed Lee Holmes to score directly from a corner in a 2-2 draw. He played one more match before Jurgen Klopp shifted him on.

18 | Doni

Alisson wasn’t the first Brazilian goalkeeper at Anfield. Liverpool signed Doni - who had played 199 times for Roma - in the summer of 2011 on a free transfer.

He was second-choice to Pepe Reina in his first season and got his chance when the Spaniard was sent off against Newcastle in April. However, in his second match against Blackburn, Doni also received a red card after conceding a penalty, costing him a starting position in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley v Everton. It was a decision that left him in tears.

In total, he played four times in the Premier League before Brad Jones arrived to displace him.

17 | Brad Jones

Talking of Jones. Liverpool signed him from Middlesbrough - mainly because he qualified as a "home-grown" player. He made his Premier League debut in that Blackburn match in which Doni was sent off, saving the resulting penalty and celebrated it by pointing to the sky in memory of his late son, Luca.

He also played in that FA Cup semi-final, which Doni missed as the Reds beat Everton to reach the final. In total, he played 11 times in the league for Liverpool before leaving in 2015.

16 | Mike Hooper

Hooper was understudy to Bruce Grobbelaar (more on him later) from 1985-1993.

But the arrival of David James put an end to a Liverpool career which saw him play 51 times in the league.

He left for Newcastle but his Newcastle career ended when he was caught on camera openly laughing, whilst on the bench after his side had conceded a goal. He never played senior football again.

15 | Pegguy Arphexad

Arphexad won six medals at Liverpool, playing second-fiddle to Sander Westerveld during the club’s treble season in 2000/01. He played just twice in the league. In fact, during his entire career, the Guadeloupe-born ‘keeper played just 39 times - and 21 of them were for Leicester.

14 | Danny Ward

Ward may not have done much at Liverpool but the fact he earned the club such a hefty profit, he deserves a slightly higher place than his performances suggest.

He was signed from Wrexham in 2012 for just £100,000.

He played twice in the league during the 2015/16 season before a very successful loan spell at Huddersfield, where he helped them earn promotion to the Premier League. Ward was the hero in the semi-final and final of the playoffs, where Huddersfield triumphed on penalties.

After Alisson arrived in the summer of 2018, he joined Leicester for £12.5 million.

13 | Paul Jones

Jones became Liverpool’s oldest debutant at 36 after joining on loan during a goalkeeping injury crisis in 2004. He played twice in the league, keeping a clean sheet against Aston Villa in one of them.

12 | Scott Carson

A Champions League winner at Liverpool. Carson only played four times in the league for the Anfield club and was used as a back-up to Pepe Reina for most of his career on Merseyside.

He did play three times in the Champions League though, including the first leg against Juventus in the victorious 2004/05 season - where he made a mistake to allow Fabio Cannavaro to make it 2-1 at Anfield.

Now contracted to Manchester City, of course.

11 | Chris Kirkland

At just 20, Kirkland became the most expensive goalkeeper in British transfer history when Liverpool signed him for £6 million in 2001.

But he signed on the same day as Jerzy Dudek and was largely his understudy.

Numerous injuries meant that he only managed 25 league appearances in four seasons - although he did play 45 times in all competitions.

10 | Brad Friedel

Liverpool deserve credit for ‘discovering’ Friedel, signing him for £1.7m from Columbus Crew in 1997. But he was only given 25 league games before allowing to leave for Blackburn on a free.

He went on to become a Premier League legend with Blackburn, Aston Villa and Tottenham.

9 | Loris Karius

His Liverpool career will always be remembered by THAT night in Kiev. He had battled with Mignolet for a No.1 spot and had actually produced some decent performances during the 2017/18 season.

But those two mistakes in the Champions League final against Real Madrid ended his Liverpool career.

8 | Adrian

Adrian wasn’t supposed to play much of a role this season having signed for a free transfer in the summer.

But on the opening night of the season just days after arriving, he was thrown into the deep end after Alisson’s injury. He’s helped the club win all 10 of the Premier League games he’s played so far and was the hero during the Super Cup penalty shootout win against Chelsea.

7 | Bruce Grobbelaar

He probably should be higher in the list but considering the Zimbabwean only played two seasons in the Premier League, we can’t really judge him on the previous 13 campaigns before that.

He won six First Division titles but only played 34 times in the Premier League.

6 | Simon Mignolet

Signed in the summer of 2013 from Sunderland for £6 million, Mignolet lasted six seasons at Liverpool before being sold to Club Brugge.

He saved an 89th-minute penalty 1–0 home win against Stoke on his debut and played every single match during his first season. He almost helped the club win the Premier League title that season but mistakes started creeping before he was replaced by Alisson.

5 | David James

James, perhaps harshly, was nicknamed ‘Calamity James’ for some of his performances for Liverpool. However, in hindsight, he was a pretty solid goalkeeper for them playing for seven seasons before moving on to Aston Villa.

4 | Sander Westerveld

Signed for £4 million from Vitesse in 1999, becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in British football and succeeded in dislodging James as the club’s No. 1.

He helped Liverpool achieve the treble during the 2000/01 season but he was error-prone and Benitez responded by signing both Dudek and Kirkland on the same day.

Was once sent off in a Merseyside derby for a proper old school scrap with Francis Jeffers.

3 | Jerzy Dudek

His Istanbul heroics means Dudek will always be fondly remembered by Liverpool fans. In truth, the Pole was always capable of making mistakes but was the club’s first-choice for four consecutive seasons before Pepe Reina’s arrival.

But who can forget THAT double save from Andriy Shevchenko in extra-time and then saving from the same striker in the penalty shootout?

2 | Pepe Reina

Reina replaced Dudek as the club’s No.1 and held that honour for eight seasons, making 285 appearances in the Premier League.

He only has an FA Cup, a League Cup, a Community Shield and a Super Cup to show for it, though, with Reina playing during a disappointing era at Liverpool.

Mignolet eventually came in to take his place as Reina went on loan to Napoli, before a spell at Bayern Munich, Napoli again, Milan and now Aston Villa.

1 | Alisson

Liverpool spent a lot of money on a goalkeeper that they scored seven goals against in their Champions League semi-final tie the previous season.

But we’ve already spoken about just how incredible he’s been.

He’s just to lose a match at Anfield, has kept 31 clean sheets in his 57 Premier League games and was crucial in helping Liverpool win the Champions League last season.
