Troy Deeney played a key role in Watford’s shock 3-0 victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday night. The 31-year-old, who has been a Watford player since 2010 and was appointed club captain in 2014, scored one and assisted another of the hosts’ three goals at Vicarage Road.Ismaila Sarr put Watford 2-0 up with two goals early in the second half, before Deeney completed the rout in the 72nd minute.“It was hard work, putting in a shift,” Deeney said after the final whistle, per the Daily Mail. “Somebody had to beat Liverpool, why not us? We're hard to beat on our patch, we go after second balls and make it difficult for them,“At half-time, everyone had a belief that we could get at them. We had it at Man Utd, we were the better team in the first half but then conceded a penalty and struggled.“We had a tight block and hit them on the break, we have pace on the break and we got the goals today.”Watford’s unexpected victory lifted them out of the relegation zone. They now sit 17th in the table, above 18th-placed Bournemouth on goal difference. This was the Hornets’ first league win since beating the Cherries on January 12 and the perfect response after losing 3-0 away at Manchester United last Sunday. An interview that Deeney conducted in the aftermath of that defeat at Old Trafford was brought up immediately after the Watford v Liverpool game.In that interview, the powerful striker told reporters: “We’ll take it on the chin, move forward… and we’ve got a nice easy one against Liverpool next week.”Watch it here…

Deeney predicted the future!

Needless to say, he was being sarcastic at the time.

Deeney had no idea that Watford would find it relatively straightforward against Jurgen Klopp’s formidable side, who simply weren’t at the races for once this season.

But that’s the beauty of the Premier League, right? Anything can happen.

Except Liverpool letting this Premier League title slip away from them. There’s no chance that’s happening, despite this unexpected setback.
