Elinor Barker won Team GB's first gold medal at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

The 25-year-old took the top spot in the points race with a winning score of 50 points after becoming the only rider to gain a lap in the race.

United States cyclist Jennifer Valente gained silver and Norway's Anita Yvonne Stenberg placed third.

"It felt surreal after gaining the lap. There were still 15 laps to go and I was completely gone," Barker told BBC Sport.

Barker said: "I was relying on the fact that everyone else was really close together and controlling each other."

"I had a conversation with my coach before over whether we would we be happy to say I had a good ride. I said, 'No I'd rather take some big risks'. That could either have put me in 15th or put me in a position to win."

Earlier in the Championships, Barker helped Great Britain to a silver medal in the team pursuit, losing out in the final to the United States.

Along with her teammates Katie Archibald, Neah Evans and Ellie Dickinson, they finished in 4:11:235 seconds, almost two seconds behind the US. Laura Kenny replaced Evans in the first round to help the team qualify for the final.

This was Team GB's third team pursuit silver in a row at the World Championships and they are the current Olympic champions having won gold at Rio 2016.

Of her team pursuit medal, Barker told BBC Sport: "I think it is going to be really close when we get to Tokyo. The changes over the last few years - aerodynamically, physiologically, going to longer turns - have been interesting."

In other races Team GB has been less fortunate with Laura Kenny placing 12th in the Omnium after a crash left her out of contention for a medal.

Luckily for the four-time Olympic medallist, her already injured shoulder wasn't damaged in the crash and she was able to continue racing.
