Teenager Heaven Fitch has made history in the United States by becoming the first woman to win a high school championship in her state.

Fitch was declared the winner for the 48kg weight class at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s wrestling championships.

She was the only female in the eight-competitor class and showed the males that she was a force to be reckoned with by providing some dominating performances, in front of a supportive crowd.

On her route to the final, Fitch won the first round with a dominate pin and won the second round with a 9-4 decision. She followed these results with a hugely impressive 11-3 decision win in the final, beating Robbinsville’s Luke Wilson.

The final saw some tense moments, however. Fitch was underneath her opponent and could have been pinned down, but she managed to turn the tables by flipping him over and pinning him instead. The referee ultimately raised her opponent's hand to announce her as the victor.

Following her victory, Fitch talked to WRAL-TV. She said: “I’m just really overwhelmed… it’s, like, insane what I’ve done… I thought as a freshman I wouldn’t even have a winning record, and to do this now, I would have never thought of it.”

The teenager originally started wrestling through her brothers, who were involved in the sport. Her parents initially weren’t convinced and thought she should try some other sports instead.

Luckily, however, they let her take part in the sport. Fitch said it took a lot of nagging her parents as they didn’t want her to get hurt.

It seems as though she is fine holding her own though, as she has now won her state championship and holds a record of 54-4 in the sport. Fitch was also awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the 1A championship, the wrestling association said.

Let’s hope she continues to break more records and stereotypes in the future.
