In 2017, the wrestling world was hyped when a much-loved match type made its way back into the limelight.

First seen in 1987 at the Great American Bash, the WarGames match saw two rings put together, covered by one gigantic cage-like structure.

It was created by Dusty Rhodes, and it seems two stars start in the ring and one person from each team ends up joining the match after equal intervals.

It's usually a match full of death-defying, brutal spots, and in the 1990s WCW hosted the match once a year at their Fall Brawl pay-per-view. The last WarGames match took place on an episode of Nitro in 2000, and after WCW went out of business we thought it may never be seen again.

That was until 2017, where WWE surprisingly brought back the match to the NXT brand, along with naming their November TakeOver event 'War Games'. Undisputed Era have been in all three mens WarGames matches in NXT but have only been victorious once.

Whilst Dusty Rhodes created the match, WWE trademarked the name, meaning that his son Cody could not take it to All Elite Wrestling - but it won't stop them using the idea.

The match was confirmed as coming to the March 25 episode of Dynamite in Newark during the Revolution pay-per-view last night, and it has been titled 'Blood & Guts'.

At the after-show press conference, AEW owner Tony Khan explained the reasoning behind the name, and shots seem to have been fired at Vince McMahon.

"I have not used that term and will never use that term," said Khan referring to the 'WarGames' name of the original match, per WrestlingInc.

"You'll never see me using that expression."

"The expression we're using for this match is Blood & Guts.

"It's everything to us, it's a heart and soul struggle, but it's also a metaphor for our company in that it's both a serious thing in that it's wrestling-centric, but we're also having fun with it."

Fans see it though as a direct shot at McMahon for his comments regarding AEW in 2019, where he said that he could not see TNT wanting to broadcast the 'the blood and guts and gory things', that AEW had been doing in their opening shows.

We've already seen the WarGames match come back to life in NXT, but no doubt AEW will make it even more brutal than it already has been!
