Manchester City have won the first domestic trophy of the season after beating Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley.City were looking to win the competition for a third consecutive year and took the lead through Sergio Aguero’s deflected effort from Phil Foden’s knock-down after 20 minutes.Ten minutes later, the final appeared over when Rodri headed in from Ilkay Gundogan’s corner.However, there was controversy surrounding the award of the corner as the ball came off Gundogan and not Jack Grealish. Restarts aren't in VAR's "remit" and therefore couldn't overturn it.But Villa got themselves back into it just before half-time when Tanzanian Mbwana Samata converted Anwar El-Ghazi after John Stones had slipped in the build-up.
And Dean Smith's side gave City a proper match in the second half and refused to crumble under pressure from their opponents.
But they just couldn't find an equaliser for themselves. The closest they came was when Bjorn Engels' header from a corner was tipped onto the post by a brilliant Claudio Bravo save.
It was the moment the Villians had been waiting for during the entire second half but the opportunity agonisingly passed them by.
But they can hold their heads high.
A wrongly awarded corner and a wonder save from Bravo stopped them from causing a massive upset.
