It's been just over five weeks now since we saw the triumphant return of WWE Hall of Famer Edge to a wrestling ring. The Canadian legend retired in 2011 and was presumed to never be allowed to compete again inside the squared circle. But medical science evolved and Edge ended up being cleared to compete in the 2020 Royal Rumble, but he would be put back on the sidelines no sooner than he'd returned. One night later, he would address his future on Monday Night Raw, but one of the men he eliminated from the Rumble, his former tag team partner Randy Orton, would take umbrage to the fact that he had come back.Orton delivered the 'three most devastating letters' in the business - the RKO - and then went on to hit a Con-chair-to to the previously damaged neck of the Rated-R Superstar, in a side to The Viper that we hadn't seen for years.Since then, we've been promised an explanation from Orton but received very little. In that time he's destroyed Matt Hardy twice and had a set-to with Kevin Owens, but the real confrontation would arrive last night when Edge's wife - WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix - came to Brooklyn to deliver a medical update. But you just knew that she would come face-to-face with Orton, and he duly arrived and actually have some reasoning as to why he delivered the attack.Randy actually positioned himself as a saviour, and claimed he did it to save Edge from a permanent in-ring return, and that he could return to being a father and Beth's husband without someone trying to retire him.It was a great promo from Orton, and he wasn't stopping anytime soon as he blamed Phoenix for it all, labelling her an 'enabler' for letting Edge even think about a return - but she had enough and slapped Orton round the face. And as the crowd chanted for those three deadly letters, Beth went even further and kicked Orton in the torso after he called her a bitch - and then he FINALLY dropped her with an RKO!
Secretly (or not so secretly) some fans were hoping Orton would become even more sadistic and Punt Kick her into oblivion, but that doesn't run in WWE anymore.
You could also argue that considering she battled through a Royal Rumble match just weeks ago with a nasty laceration to the head, why would one RKO lay her out? But that's not even worth really pondering.
This latest development is sure to trigger the return of the Rated-R Superstar to our screens, and it just so happens that the man himself has been advertised to be in Washington, D.C. for Raw next week.
By the time Raw rolls into the capital next week, there will be less than four weeks until WrestleMania, and there's still so many more avenues they can explore in this storyline - and it's by far the hottest thing on Monday nights right now!
