Eddie Hearn has broken big news this afternoon with the announcement that Dillian Whyte is set to face Alexander Povetkin in Manchester this summer.Hearn broke the news on Twitter, revealing that Whyte and Povetkin will come to blows on May 2 at the famous Manchester Arena.Whyte made a successful return to the sport on the undercard of Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz but on this occasion will be part of the headline event in what could be one of the biggest fights of the year.Povetkin, on the other hand, will be coming into the fight off the back of an underwhelming draw with Michael Hunter last year and will be hoping to set the record straight with a win over Whyte.Since making his return late last year, Whyte has been very vocal about the kind of fights he feels he deserves, calling out the likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Deontay Wilder on a regular basis.Povetkin might not be as big a fish as those three, but if Whyte can do away with the fearsome Russian, he could find himself one step closer to securing the fight of his dreams against one of the big three.Hearn also promised a 'huge card' with further announcements expected 'this week' in what promises to be a brilliant night for British boxing.

"Maximum violence!!! @DillianWhyte will defend his @wbcboxinginterim World heavyweight title against Alexander Povetkin May 2 @manchesterarena - huge card coming with more announcements this week."

Whyte has certainly earned his shot at bigger fights and will be desperate to prove himself capable of gatecrashing what seems to be a very exclusive club at the moment.

However, with Fury set for a trilogy fight with Wilder and Joshua all booked up to fight Kubrat Pulev, Whyte will have to wait his turn.

A ding-dong battle with the seventh-ranked heavyweight in the world will certainly keep him busy in the meantime.
