Women's Sport: Johanna Konta secures first win of 2020 as Heather Watson loses at the Monterrey Open

Johanna Konta won her first match of the year at the Monterrey Open beating Kim Clijsters 6-3 7-5.

It was Konta’s first win of 2020 after she was knocked out in the first rounds of the Australian Open, St Petersburg Open and Brisbane International.

After failing to convert two break points early in the first set, Konta went on to win four games in a row to take it.

The second set was much closer and seemed to be heading for a tie-break until an unforced error by Clijsters gave Konta the win.

The match was Clijsters’ second match since coming out of retirement. The Belgian four-time Grand Slam winner’s first match back was at the Dubai Tennis Championships where she lost to Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain.

After the match, BBC Sport reports Konta said: “I feel truly privileged and honoured to share the court with such a champion.” She added: “It’s nice to have her back.

“As a young player, I never thought I’d get to play Kim Clijsters in my career.”

Clijsters said: “I’ve been through different generations and played many players throughout my whole career. I’m still at a stage where I want to focus on what I’m doing and how I’m feeling, and also start reading my opponents.

“It’s a process that I have to trust and keep working hard to improve in every match I play. I’d like to take big steps but I have to focus on small steps and improving day by day.”

Konta, who is ranked no.16 in the world will face Tatijana Maria in the next round.

Maria defeated Heather Watson in the opening round 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 5-7. Watson’s loss comes after she won her fourth tournament at the Mexican Open and re-entered the world’s top 50 for the first time in five years.

Venus Williams, the former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam champion was also one of the headline names who was knocked out in the first round when she was beaten by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Belgian in three sets.
