Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller performed one of the worst corner kicks of the entire 2019-20 football season so far.You might think that the World Cup winner might be comfortable in taking a simple corner kick and at least pick out a fellow player in red. Think again.First of all, the German looked disinterested in taking the set piece, walking away from the ball as if he were leaving it for a teammate. Then, as if planned, he darted towards the ball, though he probably wished he hadn’t.The slippery Phillippe Coutinho made a clever run towards the near post and found himself unmarked in the area. Muller, clearly possessing the vision to see this run, attempted to capitalise on the opportunity but got it horribly, horribly wrong.Instead, the attacker mishit the still ball and desperately watched it bobble out of play for a goal kick as the jeering from the Schalke home fans commenced. It’s fair to say that Muller himself – in his best attempt to recreate the same creative thinking as Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold against Barcelona – knew how badly he had failed.He dropped to his knees almost instantly and buried his head in the turf with frustration with what he had just produced before joining his teammates in the ultimate walk of shame back into his position.
In turn, but for a few cheap pops on social media, it didn’t really matter. Bayern bettered Schalke 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the German Cup after Joshua Kimmich’s first-half strike.
Muller has otherwise enjoyed one of his most successful seasons with the Bundesliga giants and his attempted pass should definitely come as a surprise to everyone.
This season alone, he has already recorded 16 assists in the league to help push his side to the top of the table; he has already bettered his assists tally last season of 10.
