Eric Dier joins a list of footballers to have clashed with fans following his altercation with a Tottenham fan on Wednesday evening.
The Spurs midfielder ran into the stands after spotting his younger brother arguing with fellow fans following the club’s defeat to Norwich City in the FA Cup.
‘Cantona’ was trending on Twitter on Thursday morning as fans remembered the former Manchester United forward’s infamous kung-fu kick at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons in 1995.
And it’s left us thinking about more moments in which players and fans have clashed.
Here are nine times players and fans have come face-to-face.
Patrice Evra | November 2017
Evra lost his cool after being insulted by Marseille fans ahead of the French club’s Europa League contest against Vitoria in 2017.
According to L’Equipe, fans chanted “get out of Marseille, you’re bad” and “go back to your videos” towards the left-back.
Evra was furious and attempted to kick one fan who had gotten close to the pitch in the side of the head.
The former Man United defender was sent off, fined €10,000 and banned from playing in European competitions until the following summer.
His contract with Marseille was also terminated.
Jamie Carragher | January 2002
Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher received a £40,000 fine and a three-match ban after he threw a coin towards Arsenal supporters in an FA Cup contest against Arsenal in 2002.
Carragher had been stamped on by Dennis Bergkamp, who was sent off, when Arsenal supporters directed their anger towards the centre-back, with one fan throwing a coin towards him.
Carragher was sent off by referee Mike Riley and later apologised for his behaviour, although he avoided legal charges.
Craig Bellamy | September 2009
Craig Bellamy shoved a pitch invader in the face during Manchester City’s 4-3 defeat to rivals Manchester United.
The fan, Jake Clarke, was banned from attending football matches for three years following the incident.
Clarke was a Man United fan and he told officers he “just wanted to celebrate with the players” following Michael Owen’s late winner for United.
Eric Cantona | January 1995
The images of Cantona leaping into the crowd and kicking Simmons remain iconic to this day.
The pair then traded punches before the Man United forward was hauled away. Cantona was fined £200,000 by the Red Devils and banned from football for nine months.
Dida | October 2004
A Celtic fan ran onto the pitch at Parkhead and playfully slapped AC Milan goalkeeper Dida on the shoulder after Scott McDonald’s winner in the Champions League, causing the Brazilian to theatrically fall to the ground.
Celtic were handed a £25,000 fine from UEFA while Dida was given a two-match ban for playacting.
Derek Riordan | May 2009
Riordan scored a late winner for Hibernian against Hearts and was confronted by an angry Hearts fan on the pitch.
Referee Steve Conroy quickly came to help the Hibs forward by getting between him and the fan.

Neil Lennon | May 2011
Lennon’s playing days were behind him when a Hearts supporter attempted to attack him on the touchline while he was the manager of Celtic.
Police managed to get to the fan, John Wilson, before he could land a serious punch.
A case of assault against Wilson was surprisingly found not proven at court, but he was jailed for breach of the peace.
Esteban Alvardo | December 2011
