Tottenham’s hopes of winning a trophy appear to be over for another season after they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Norwich City on Wednesday night.
Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten on penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the scores were tied at 1-1 following extra-time.
Jan Vertonghen opened the scoring for Spurs early in the first half, but Josip Drmic’s goal in the 78th minute sent the tie to extra-time. Erik Lamela, Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes all failed to convert during the shoot-out as Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul emerged as the hero.
The FA Cup was Tottenham’s more realistic chance of winning silverware this season.
They have no chance of winning the Premier League title - they current sit seventh in the table, 39 points behind league-leaders Liverpool - and they’re also in serious danger of being eliminated from the Champions League after losing 1-0 in their last-16 first leg against RB Leipzig last month.
Following their latest setback, a clip of Giorgio Chiellini offering a brutal assessment of Spurs has gone viral (again) on social media.
“It’s the history of Tottenham,” the defender said.
“They also create many chances and score many goals but, at the end, they always miss something to arrive at the end [lack something].
“We believe in the history.”

In the same interview, the Italian added: “I think also yesterday in the game between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, the history is important. Spurs just need that little something to start winning games like this – a trophy, a spark, a something.
“When you can’t win with great football, you have to find another route.”
Needless to say, Chiellini’s comments amused football fans at the time - especially Arsenal supporters - and it’s received the same response after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by the Canaries.
Mourinho was brought to Tottenham to help the club finally win trophies after Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure.
But the Portuguese coach is already acutely aware that winning silverware with the north London outfit will be no mean feat.
