Wayne Rooney will be the centre of attention as Derby County play Manchester United tonight.

The former England captain will play against the team for whom he scored 253 goals, more than any player in the Red Devils' history, and will have the chance to prove he's still a top player.

It's easy to forget that Rooney is 'only' 34 years old, which seems surprising when you consider Cristiano Ronaldo is still tearing up a top European league at one year his senior.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that Rooney's game has gone completely off the rails, rather that he's decided to wind down his career in a more abrupt fashion.

Rooney was dealt a tough hand on his return to Everton and probably could have stayed on Merseyside for another season, while his move to DC United was undoubtedly successful.

Rooney's life at Derby County

However, nobody saw his move to Derby coming last year because, well, witnessing England's all-time top scorer facing off with Barnsley and Luton Town is pretty hard to compute.

So, what can United expect from their former caption tonight? Besides, Rooney's performances at Pride Park have largely gone under the radar.

Well, YouTuber 'PLYABALL' is pushing the narrative that Rooney has proven himself to be a class above in the Championship and over 350,000 fans have clicked to see the evidence.

'Too good for the Championship'?

The video, simply titled: 'Wayne Rooney Is Too Good For Championship!', shows the 34-year-old playing in a deeper role for the Rams and spraying brilliant passes around England's second tier.

But don't just take our word for it, check out the full video down below and form your own opinion:

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

Rooney could still do a job in the Premier League, there's no doubt about it.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Rooney would get close to the United starting XI, no matter how despised Andreas Pereira might be, but there's definitely still mileage in those mid-thirty legs.

Rooney has been dying to play in a deeper role and he's looked a real threat for Derby with his penetrating set-pieces and long, diagonal balls to full-backs.

It's a shame that Rooney's career has burnt out as quickly as it has, but stepping down to the MLS and Championship was too jarring of a step down for a player of his talents.

Regardless, though, nobody would be surprised if he popped up with a goal against his former side and etched his name in the history books for the one-millionth time.
