Bruno Fernandes' arrival in January understandably sparked optimism among Manchester United fans.

For the first time in years, the Red Devils had acquired a playmaker at the very top of his game and he's already proving his worth in the famous red shirt.

In his first seven games in all competitions, Fernandes has contributed three goals and two assists, as well as turning in a number of man-of-the-match performances.

After United's comfortable 3-0 win away at Derby County last night, they can also boast that they have not lost a game since the Portuguese midfielder made his debut for the club against Wolves.

The Red Devils have won four of those games and drawn three, scoring 15 goals along the way and conceding just two. Have United finally turned a corner under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?

For the first time in what feels like years, United actually have some structure to their play, with Fernandes finally providing that much-needed link between midfield and attack.

The negative clouds that hung over Old Trafford for much of the season are finally beginning to clear - and Fernandes has played a major role in shifting them.

ANALYSIS

GMS' Danny Ryan says:

I'll be the first to admit that I believed Fernandes' signing was overhyped and that the jump from Liga NoS to the Premier League would overwhelm the 25-year-old.

How wrong I was. Fernandes has needed no time to adjust to the most demanding league in world football, which is testament to his quality - quality that already looks worth more than United's £68m investment.

With Fred now delivering on a consistent basis alongside Fernandes, United are just a Paul Pogba away from possessing a midfield trio that will have the rest of Europe green with envy.

How long has it been since we could say that, eh?

It already looks a certainty that Fernandes will feature in those 'greatest January purchases in Premier League history' lists in the years to come!
