If you imagine the education and training it takes to qualify as a Premier League fourth official, surely dealing with stroppy managers must be pretty high up on the syllabus.Because managers cannot simply sprint onto the pitch and confront the referee, the poor fourth official (as the nearest person in uniform) always seems to get an earful. As such, one of the fourth official’s main jobs is to diffuse the tension within each technical area, and essentially ensure that emotional managers don’t lose it completely. It might seem like a fairly simple task on paper, but when you have a volatile guy like José Mourinho on your hands, it becomes a completely different animal.Particularly when his side, who boast huge names and possibly the world’s best stadium, can’t seem to muster the quality required to overcome a less glamorous outfit like Burnley. As you’re probably aware, Spurs eventually relied on a second-half Dele Alli penalty to nick a point from Turf Moor, after Chris Wood took the lead for the Clarets after just 13 minutes. With no win in five games in all competitions, José’s antics in his technical area were quickly heightening, but fortunately, fourth official Andy Madley found brilliant way to deal with it.Take a look below at how Madley chose to deal with the Spurs boss on the sidelines:

Madley gives the ranting Mourinho the time of day for about three seconds, before turning away and giving an eye roll to referee Jonathan Moss, with a hint of a grin on his face.

There was probably no better way to deal with The Special One in that moment.

Madley didn’t let it get under his skin, and essentially did what we football fans all do in sharing our frustration, as well as finding a bit of humour, in the enigma that is José Mourinho.

His Spurs side will now need to rely on a big change in fortunes to make the top-four this year. They now lie four points behind Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

And we’re sure the fourth officials at Tottenham’s remaining matches will hear all about it!
