Carlos Tevez kissed Diego Maradona for good luck before winning title for Boca Juniors

With the Argentina Primera Division title on the line, Carlos Tevez took every measure to ensure that his boyhood club, Boca Juniors, would secure the vital win on Saturday night.

Given that Tevez has been prolific at almost every club for whom he has played, you’d be forgiven for assuming that he’d rely on his natural talent alone to win the trophy for his side.

But apparently, that’s not enough!

Boca Juniors were a point behind River Plate at the start of play, so Tevez knew that to secure the title, Boca both needed to win and hope that River wouldn’t beat Atletico Tucuman.

With all that in mind, Tevez took matters into his own hands and found a slice of luck from an unlikely source: namely, the manager of their opponents Gimnasia – Diego Maradona!

Prior to kick-off, Tevez decided to venture into Gimnasia’s technical area, walked straight up to Maradona and gave him a massive kiss on the lips for good luck.

Although he now manages Gimnasia, Maradona occupies iconic status among Boca fans. He enjoyed two successful spells at the club in the 1980s and 1990s, and ended his career there.

Maradona is also regarded as one of Argentina’s greatest players and as we all know too well, he is notorious for the ‘Hand of God’ that helped knock England out of the 1986 World Cup.

So, for Tevez, it was a no-brainer that in order to help Boca to a 34th league title, he simply had to get a bit of that Maradona magic somehow.

As he explained to Ole: “I knew I had to kiss Diego, I was lucky that way… sometimes you have to look for luck.”

And believe it or not, it worked! While River could only manage a 1-1 draw in their game, Tevez scored the winning goal for Boca against Gimnasia with just 18 minutes remaining.

That series of remarkable events saw Boca claim their 34th Argentina Primera division title, their third in four years, and robbed River of their first title win since 2014.

And given his connections to Boca, we’re sure Maradona isn’t complaining one bit!
