Manchester City endured a nightmare afternoon at Old Trafford as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the derby.

Bruno Fernandes created the opener with a clever dink of a free-kick into the feet of Anthony Martial, before Scott McTominay finally put the icing on the cake in injury time after Ederson had thrown the ball into his path.

The Brazilian should also have done far better for Martial's goal, being beaten at his near post. Then, he was caught in possession and nearly committed an awful howler right inside his own six-yard box.

Pep Guardiola cannot afford for his stopper to have another horrorshow against Arsenal on Wednesday, but there will be another man watching on with a vested interest. That man is Jurgen Klopp.

Courtesy of Liverpool's 2-1 turnaround against Bournemouth on Saturday, the Reds will now be hoping for a couple more City defeats to ensure they go to Goodison Park on March 16 as champions. If Guardiola's side were to lose to both Arsenal in midweek and at home to Burnley next weekend, then Liverpool will have won the league without kicking another ball.

They had initially hoped to win the league by beating Everton, but their first title in 30 years could be sealed before then.

The away end could be one big party.

It seems unlikely that City will lose both, though Arsenal are unbeaten in the league in 2020 and will fancy their chances in finally getting a win away to a big six side.

Burnley ran Tottenham close on Saturday evening but it would still represent a huge shock if they were to beat the current champions.

Either way, it's now just a matter of time before Liverpool are mathematically clear at the top. Funny really, for a team that was still in crisis on Saturday morning...
