Italy's Serie A has been suspended after the country's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte extended its coronavirus quarantine measures to include a ban on public gatherings.All sporting events in Italy have been suspended until at least April 3 as the European nation continues its battle against Covid-19.Italy's top sports body, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), called for all sports to be cancelled until next month and asked the government to help enforce the measure.This includes all Serie A matches but doesn't cover Italian clubs or national teams competing in international competitions such as the Champions League or 2020 European Championships.CONI said in a statement: "Health protection is the top priority for everyone."Five Serie A games were played in empty stadiums on Sunday.There are still 12 rounds of games still to be played.Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus currently lead the division after defeating Inter Milan 2-0 on Sunday.The Old Lady sit just a point above second-placed Lazio.Fans will be eager to see the conclusion of what has been a thrilling battle but the action has been put on hold until at least April 3.

Around 16 million in the northern part of Italy are in lockdown as the country struggles to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

There have been more than 9,000 confirmed cases of the virus in Italy, with 463 deaths.

It is the worst hit country after China.

Italy's Prime Minister Conte says the new measures were necessary to help defend the most fragile members of the community.

He added that citizens should stay at home.
