Football fans aren't convinced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has endured a turbulent time at Manchester United since signing a contract to become the club’s permanent manager in March last year.

The Norwegian has never quite managed to replicate the purple patch that saw him promoted from his caretaker role, and now fans have had their say on his tenure in his first full season in charge.

GivemMeSport asked fans. ‘Do you think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had a successful season at Manchester United?’ and over 78,000 responded.

The results revealed a divide in opinions with 46% of you believing that Solskjaer has been successful this season, while 54% of you disagreed.

Stuttering form before the Christmas period saw United sitting in ninth place by the time December arrived with disappointing losses to West Ham, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Despite an opening day thrashing of Chelsea, the club only managed four wins in their first 14 games and had the question been posed then, the result would surely have been very different.

Wins against Tottenham and Manchester City in December appeared to signal a potential upturn in form, but frustratingly for fans, results have remained patchy.

The Red Devils are currently fifth in the Premier League table, just three points behind fourth placed Chelsea, but are being chased hard by the likes of Wolves and Sheffield United, who have a game in hand.

Elsewhere, the team are still in the mix in the Europa League with a fixture against Austrian minnows LASK in the Round of 16, and in the FA Cup they have a quarter-final match up against Premier League strugglers Norwich.

United fans will be hoping that January’s new arrivals can help fix some of the problems with consistency.

Bruno Fernandes has already put in some game-changing performances, and Odion Ighalo is beginning to find that goalscoring touch once again.

Noises from within the United camp are promising with senior players such as Nemanja Matic suggesting they have seen improvements from Solskjaer himself.

Matic told SkySports: “Every day he is improving, getting more experience. For sure he will be better and better.

“Like every manager – Carlo Ancelotti, now and 20 years ago he is not the same. He knows more, he gets more experience, so it will be the same with Ole.

“He is a much better manager than one year ago, in my opinion.

“Now he knows all of the players, he knows exactly what he needs to do before the game, after the game.

“For his job, the experience is very important.”

Should United hold on to fifth in the league and progress well in other competitions, it will be interesting to see the fans’ assessment of Ole again.
