All sport in Italy has been suspended until at least April 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Serie A games had been initially played behind-closed-doors prior to the decision made by the country's prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, last night to quarantine the entire nation.
It's thrown the entire Italian top-flight season into chaos and it now looks near enough impossible for the 38-game Serie A campaign to be concluded - especially if Euro 2020 goes ahead as planned.
However, the international tournament looks all but certain to be delayed until either the winter or the summer of 2021, with the coronavirus outbreak currently impacting the entirety of Europe.
As such, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have confirmed they will try and postpone the Serie A season until May 31 to help contain the spread of the coronavirus in Italy.
But how would the results from the campaign be attained? Well, one option could be to enforce a play-off system to determine the winner of the league and the relegation places.
A statement from FIGC President Gabriele Gravina reads, per Football Italia: “If the COVID-19 emergency should not allow for the conclusion of the league competitions, President Gravina put forward some proposals that will be discussed in another meeting on March 23.
“Without any order of priority, an option would be not assigning the Scudetto and consequently informing UEFA of the teams qualified for Europe.
“Another would be referring to the table as it stands up until the moment the season was interrupted.
“A third and final hypothesis would be to organise play-offs for the title of Champion of Italy and play-outs to decide relegation into Serie B.”
Not since the 1963/64 season has the destination of the Serie A title been decided by a play-off.
That year, Bologna and Inter Milan both finished on 54 points and played a one-off game at a neutral venue, with the former winning 2-0.
This summer, we could see current table-toppers Juventus (63 points) and Lazio (62 points) go head-to-head to decide the fate of the Serie A title.
