UEFA consider postponing Euro 2020 until next year so domestic leagues can finish this summer

The tournament is in serious doubt

The spread of coronavirus is causing major disruption to sporting events across Europe. As of writing a number of La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 fixtures are to be played behind closed doors. The Italian football federation have already suspended all domestic matches, meaning there's genuine doubt the season will even be finished before the summer. On top of that, Champions League and Europa League games have been affected, with no supporters allowed into stadiums to watch over the next two weeks. There's even speculation that UEFA could call off their flagship competition after the last 16 stage finishes next Wednesday. Should that happen, coupled with the fact Serie A has been suspended and other leagues could follow, there will be a serious knock-on effect on Euro 2020. So much so, that UEFA will reportedly consider postponing this summers' championship until 2021. They have been asked to do so by 'several European federations' who want their domestic fixture list to be completed over the summer. "Several European federations ask UEFA to postpone EURO 2020 until 2021, in order to complete their respective championships," journalist Adriano Del Monte tweeted."The idea is being considered by UEFA."

Postponing Euro 2020 would be an unprecedented step, but it's one that could become more and more likely as the months roll on.

However, at this moment in time, UEFA are 'confident the tournament will go ahead as usual and have no plans to change it at this stage.'

That's according to The Sun, who also report that a task-force has been set up, with members discussing the logistics of moving matches to less-affected areas this summer.

As it stands, Euro 2020 will be played across 12 counties - with Italy being one of them.

But as the country is currently in lockdown, it may be unable to host fixtures.

We won't know for sure what will happen with Euro 2020 until we here an official statement from UEFA.

But rather than postponing the tournament, surely it makes more sense at this moment in time to plan and move the matches to areas less affected by coronavirus?
