In the recent history of Liverpool goalkeeping howlers on big Champions League nights, Adrian's offence against Atletico Madrid was not the worst.

The stand-in stopper must still face up to the reality that his errors ultimately cost his side a place in the quarter-finals.

First, his poor clearance led to Marcos Llortente's first goal, his initial mistake compounded as he slipped while trying to keep it out. He should also have done better to get down to Llorente's second.

Alvaro Morata then easily finished past his compatriot to put Atleti's progression beyond doubt.

It will frustrate Jurgen Klopp that, on a night when Jordan Henderson returned, he still could not field a full-strength XI due to Alisson's injury.

Adrian's presence will have particularly set the nerves jangling because of his error which gifted Willian a goal in the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea last week.

That said, you have to feel for the Spaniard, who is only a back-up 'keeper and was called upon for one of Liverpool's biggest games of the season.

Earlier in the campaign, Adrian actually acquitted himself very well and there's no doubt he picked up some vital points for his team along the way.

On this occasion, it wasn't his night and that's been reflected by two leading Spanish newspapers failing to even give him a mark in their usual player ratings.

As seen in the Liverpool Echo, AS declined to even recognise his display at all. The second image below shows Marca adopting a similar tactic.

It will be particularly hurtful for the 33-year-old that these are publications from his native country.

Sadly, he has also been receiving a torrent of abuse on social media after putting his head above the parapet and tweeting to express his disappointment:

His teammates should also bear some of the brunt of that wrath.

Virgil van Dijk should never have backed off as much as he did in the build-up to Atleti's second goal and at the other end of the pitch, Liverpool just weren't clinical enough despite dominating.

It's going to be very hard for Adrian to pick himself up should he be required again this season. His confidence must be at an all-time low.
