An Ashley Barnes goal midway through the second half was enough for npower League One leaders Brighton to beat Oldham 1-0 and open up a seven-point gap on second place Huddersfield.

Barnes' strike was the only effort on goal for Brighton at Boundary Park as the hosts, marooned in midtable dominated proceedings, especially in terms of their attacking endeavour.

Huddersfield were held 0-0 at the Galpharm Stadium by relegation-threatened Swindon with experienced midfielder David Prutton starring in midfield for the visitors.

Bournemouth failed to take advantage of the fact they were the only team in the play off positions playing and slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Carlisle as Peter Murphy slotted home from six yards.

Plymouth have been left further behind the pack in the fight for survival after losing 1-0 at home to Rochdale, whilst fellow strugglers Walsall came from behind to beat Hartlepool and Bristol Rovers won 1-0 at Notts County.

The good news for relegation threatened teams did not end there as the three teams just above the relegation zone also picked up victories.

Dagenham and Redbridge had a fairly comfortable 2-1 win over Charlton with goals from Jon Nurse and Danny Green as Frank Nouble scored a late consolation.

A brace from Dean Bowditch gave Yeovil a 3-2 at Exeter even though two Jamie Cureton goals had twice given the home side the lead. Sam Williams had initially headed Yeovil level.

Enoch Showumni was the goalscoring hero for Tranmere as they secured a crucial 1-0 win at home to Colchester to make it a good day for the teams at the wrong end of the league.

Elsewhere Brentford beat Leyton Orient 2-1 to dent their play-off hopes, Marcus Bean and Gary Alexander netting for the hosts before Scott McGleish notched.
