Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo has issued an Instagram statement to his millions of fans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The 35-year-old has been self-isolating in Portugal after the news that his teammate Daniele Rugani tested positive for the pathogen just days after celebrating the victory over Inter Milan.
Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram page: "The world is going through a very difficult moment which demands the utmost care and attention from all of us.
"I speak to you today not as a football player, but as a son, father, a human being concerned with the latest developments that is affecting the whole world.
"It is important we all follow the advice of WHO (World Health Organization) and the governing bodies on how we handle this current situation. Protecting human life must come above any other interests.
Ronaldo releases important statement
"I would like to send my thoughts to everyone who has lost someone close to them, my solidarity to those who are fighting the virus, like my teammate Daniele Rugani, and my continued support to the amazing health professionals putting their own lives at risk to save others. Cristiano Ronaldo."
Very well said, Cristiano. The severity of the global situation has forced the closure of Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, the Premier League and the next round of Champions League fixtures.
Football takes a back step
It's at times like these that the importance of sport pales in comparison to addressing the welfare of those at risk around the world and Ronaldo should be applauded for reiterating the fact.
While, yes, footballers are not the ultimate authority on serious matters like these, their huge social media audiences makes them the perfect vessels through which to give important advice.
And just as Ronaldo says, regardless of any misinformation or hysteria, everything must be done to ensure that the health of those around the world is at the forefront of our minds.
