Liverpool set to be given Premier League trophy even if season isn't completed

Liverpool FC v Atletico Madrid - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg

The Premier League has officially been suspended until at least April 4.

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly across the world and is showing no signs of stopping.

While there will be no Premier League action for at least three weeks, there is a belief among club officials that there is 'no chance' in that happening.

Any further delay will cause further problems and questions have been raised whether the competition will be completed.

There have already been calls for the league to be cancelled immediately.

Television personality and avid Arsenal fan Piers Morgan wrote on Friday: "Only fair thing to do is abandon this season & start all over again in August as if it never happened.

"Heart-breaking for Liverpool, Leeds etc but this is an unprecedented global pandemic that is going to get a lot worse & frankly a few hurt football fans’ feelings don’t matter."

Both Tottenham and West Ham are also believed to have wanted to void the league when club officials met on Friday.

All this would be bad news for Liverpool. The Reds have tried so hard in the last 30 years to win a Premier League title but have come unstuck every time.

They were destined to win the title this year and are just two wins away from ending their wait.

Thus, talk of the Premier League being cancelled has made Liverpool fans very nervous.

But, according to the Telegraph, there would be nothing to fear.

They write that the Reds are still likely to be crowned Premier League champions, even if the coronavirus crisis causes the season to be abandoned.

A senior club executive said that there is no opposition against the idea.

Jurgen Klopp's men have built up a 25-point gap and thus there is no desire among their rivals to deny them their crown.

So there doesn't appear to be anything to worry about, Liverpool fans. The wait for a first Premier League title looks like it will soon be over, regardless of whether the season finishes or not.

Of course, no decision has been made yet though and things could change very quickly.

One thing is for certain: Liverpool supporters won't be comfortable until Jordan Henderson lifts the trophy aloft.
