Sport across Europe has been put on hold for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus outbreak impacting the entire continent.
The Premier League declared on Friday it will be suspended until at least April 3 and it's highly likely that the postponement will last up until the summer months.
As such, fans are questioning what should be done. Should the league be declared null and void? Should we wait until July and then restart the season? It really is an unprecedented situation.
Liverpool are club most desperately in need of answers. Jurgen Klopp's side currently sit at the top of the table with a 25-point lead over Manchester City and need just six more points to mathematically secure their first title in 30 years.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic has potentially derailed that achievement. But can we really move forward without acknowledging the achievements of this irrepressible Liverpool side?
No, we cannot. That's why Man City journalist Stuart Brennan has decided to call on all rivals fans from City and United to stop joking around with regards to the season being cancelled without rewarding the Reds.
"And even if they didn’t deserve it, the response of manager Jurgen Klopp to the debate about what happens now absolutely does.
"The German has brilliantly guided his team to an unassailable position at the top of the table, forging a team which is as watchable as it is effective.
"But now, as they stand on the brink of ending 30 years without winning the league, the coronavirus outbreak could well put paid to it.
"Premier League rules state that a title is only decided when the season is complete, and some fans of Manchester United and Manchester City are clinging to that."
It's a sad fact of football tribalism that rival fans will do anything in an attempt to sour the success of their bitter rivals.
But that needs to change, especially in the scary situation the world currently finds itself in.
"Over and above that, Klopp and his players deserve to have their fabulous season rewarded," Brennan added.
"Football tribalism is great fun in the right measure, and within context, but at times like this should be put back in the box marked 'trivial'.
"Klopp made himself the public face of Liverpool and conducted himself with dignity and appropriate gravity.
"He made the point that none of this really matters and, to reciprocate that attitude, empty league rules should be dismissed, in extraordinary circumstances.
"We should all strive to do, and say, the right things, even more so in serious circumstances. And it would be right to award the title to Liverpool, even if they don't get chance to clinch it."
