Liverpool: 61% of fans believe the Reds should be handed PL title if season is cancelled

Liverpool were on the cusp of history before the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to the European football season.

The continent’s major leagues are now all suspended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and it is unclear when they will be resuming.

Most of the leagues have been provisionally postponed until the start of April, but most experts state that the suspension will continue long after and into the summer months.

Over in the Premier League, the possibility of football not resuming for months has sparked a debate over whether the entire 2019/20 season should simply be cancelled.

A number of clubs in the division are eager for this to happen, but the prospect of that occurring raises one huge question: Would Liverpool still be crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990?

Given the fact Jurgen Klopp’s team are 25 points clear of Manchester City, it should be a no-brainer and it seems the majority of fans agree with that outcome.

We here at GIVEMESPORT ran a poll asking if Liverpool should be handed the Premier League title if the season is indeed cancelled and 61% of fans voted yes.

It’s the only fair way to reward one of English football’s greatest ever teams, one that has swept all before them this season.

However, while Liverpool should be rewarded if the season is cancelled, the same principle simply cannot apply for the relegation places.

Norwich, Aston Villa and Watford currently occupy the bottom three and sending them down to the Championship without finishing the season would be absolutely criminal.

Leeds and West Brom – the two top dogs in the Championship – could then be pushed up to form a 22-team Premier League, which appears to be the only viable solution in the event of cancellation.

Picking which teams qualify for European competition could open a serious can of worms, though…
